Distalmotion is a global MedTech company dedicated to empowering access to the benefits of robotic surgery. By removing operational barriers, the company aims to enable more surgeons, across more sites of care, to deliver best-in-class minimally invasive surgery to more patients. Distalmotion’s ambition is to lower the threshold for adopting robotic surgery by aligning advanced technology with the economic and operational realities of hospitals.
Founded in 2012, Distalmotion is headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland, with a U.S. office in Cleveland, Ohio.
DEXTER® Robotic Surgery System
DEXTER® is a soft tissue surgical robot designed to simplify operations and make the benefits of wristed robotics accessible in any operating room (OR).
Unlike large, fixed robotic platforms, the design of DEXTER® centers around efficiency and flexibility. Its small, mobile footprint allows the system to integrate into operating rooms of any size without structural modifications and to be easily moved between rooms to optimize utilization. These characteristics have led DEXTER to become known as the ASC robot, reflecting its suitability for space-conscious ambulatory surgical centers in the US. A sterile console positions the surgeon close to the patient, enabling immediate bedside access and seamless transitions between laparoscopic and robotic techniques, as needed.
DEXTER avoids tying hospitals to a closed, proprietary ecosystem. Instead, the open architecture supports compatibility with existing and future OR technologies, including visualization systems and advanced devices, allowing surgical teams to adopt robotics without disrupting established infrastructure.
Wristed robotic instruments provide precision and dexterity, while the overall system design supports an efficient learning curve for setup and use.
In the United States, DEXTER is FDA approved for use in cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal), laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair, and benign hysterectomy. In Europe, it is CE certified for use in general surgery, gynecology, and urology. DEXTER is commercially available in both the United States and Europe and has been used to treat more than 3,000 patients worldwide.
