With 20 years of leadership in human-centric robotics, including more than a decade in surgical robotics, Kinova Inc., headquartered in Boisbriand (Greater Montreal), Quebec, Canada, now brings that expertise to the operating room with KIMA, a medical robotics platform built from the ground up for clinical use. Kinova partners with medical device manufacturers in three ways: integrating KIMA directly into their system, co-developing a custom arm on Kinova’s proprietary actuator and software architecture, or using Kinova’s engineering services to develop and industrialize critical subsystems. Launched in June 2026 to mark Kinova’s 20th anniversary, KIMA is a next-generation medical robotic arm engineered for precision, integration and clinical confidence. It combines a 3 kg payload with a frame weighing under 13 kg, and its compact control unit removes the bulky control box from the room entirely. Its kinematic architecture supports real clinical workflows, including endoscopy, bronchoscopy and complex surgical interventions. Its software is developed to IEC 62304 Class C with risk management to ISO 14971, which gives customers a solid foundation for their regulatory submissions. KIMA is supported by an ecosystem of premier technology partners (QNX, RTI, MedAcuity, MPE and Acontis) that resolves integration complexity for the engineering team.

Engineering services, from concept to production

Kinova‘s engineering teams extend beyond the arm to support the full development of surgical and interventional systems. Services include development planning and requirements definition, design and development of tool drives and other subsystems, verification, and industrialization. Customers gain proven medical robotics expertise and subsystems designed from day one for manufacturability and certification.
