QNX and NVIDIA Deepen Collaboration

QNX, a division of BlackBerry Limited, has announced an expansion of its collaboration with NVIDIA to enable developers to build and deploy next‑generation, safety‑critical edge AI systems on NVIDIA IGX Thor. The expanded relationship sees QNX® OS for Safety 8.0 integrated with NVIDIA IGX Thor and Halos Safety Stack, combining QNX’s proven, deterministic real‑time operating system with NVIDIA’s functional safety platform to support regulated, AI‑enabled systems across robotics, medical technologies, industrial applications and more.

A Unified Platform for Safety-Critical Edge AI

NVIDIA IGX Thor is designed to support the demanding compute, functional safety, and reliability requirements of edge AI systems deployed in regulated environments, from autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) to humanoids, surgical robotics, medical imaging, and industrial automation platforms. When combining NVIDIA IGX Thor Halos Safety Stack with QNX OS for Safety 8.0, developers can consolidate real‑time controls and safety concepts on a deterministic, microkernel‑based RTOS while using NVIDIA accelerated compute for AI‑driven capabilities such as perception, planning, and decision‑making. This unified mixed-criticality approach consolidates system architectures, supports safety certification processes, and enables rapid, scalable development from early prototypes through production deployment.

“As robotics, medical, and industrial systems become more autonomous and software defined, safety and determinism cannot be afterthoughts,” said John Wall, President, QNX. “Integrating QNX OS for Safety 8.0 with NVIDIA IGX Thor and NVIDIA Halos Safety Stack brings together a trusted real‑time safety foundation and a powerful functional safety platform for edge AI. This expanded collaboration builds on our work with the NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor Development Kit and extends the same proven architecture from automotive into the next wave of regulated, intelligent systems.”

Building on a Shared Commitment to Safety and Performance

The new milestone extends QNX’s long‑standing relationship with NVIDIA and builds on their recent announcement highlighting the integration of QNX OS for Safety 8.0 with the NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor Development Kit which aims to accelerate automotive and autonomous vehicle development. This latest collaboration underscores how the same proven safety architecture and trusted real‑time capabilities are now being applied far beyond the vehicle to robotics, medical, and industrial edge systems.

Surgical Science Launches Upgrade to Ultrasound Simulator

Surgical Science has unveiled a new Endometriosis Simulation Module, a unique ultrasound simulator dedicated to training clinicians in the detection of endometriosis. The condition affects one in ten women, yet is still associated with diagnostic delays that can stretch to nearly a decade.

The new module introduces the sliding sign, a key ultrasound indicator of deep endometriosis that is challenging to master in clinical practice because individual cases vary and real-patient training is limited. By enabling clinicians to practice this assessment repeatedly in a virtual environment, the simulator helps improve diagnostic accuracy, build confidence, and standardizes scanning quality across hospitals.

Simulation training enabled by the Endometriosis Simulation Module can deliver a variety of important benefits, including:

  • 92% of clinicians reported improved understanding of endometriosis diagnosis.
  • 40% increase in systematic Transvaginal Ultrasound (TVS) skill confidence.
  • 150% increase in confidence identifying deep endometriosis (DE).

The Endometriosis Simulation Module also integrates the internationally recognized International Deep Endometriosis Analysis (IDEA) protocol, giving trainees a structured, evidence-based roadmap to performing a complete pelvic assessment. Additional updates include new clinical case studies, region-based scenarios, adenomyosis content, and certification options, all built from real ultrasound data.

“Better training means faster, more reliable detection,” said Tom Englund, CEO of Surgical Science. “Our goal is to help reduce the long diagnostic delays many women experience by ensuring that every clinician can confidently recognize all presentations of endometriosis.”

The new Endometriosis Simulation Module is available now on ScanTrainer and will launch on the Ultrasound Mentor (female) platform in March 2026.

Surgical Science Joins the SEISMIC Consortium

Surgical Science has announced its participation in the SEISMIC research consortium. The consortium has been awarded EUR 23.5 million in public funding from the Innovative Health Initiative (IHI). The five-year program brings together leading clinical, academic, and industry partners to transform neurosurgery by integrating minimally invasive surgical techniques and advanced imaging technologies. An additional EUR 14.9 million funding from partner contributions further strengthens the initiative.

The consortium will, among other procedures, investigate a single session, image-guided procedure that combines hematoma drainage with embolization of the middle meningeal artery (MMA) in the treatment of chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH). This approach is important because bleeding recurs in approximately 30% of patients after surgery, and occluding the artery may help prevent recurrence.

Surgical Science will, together with clinical experts at Radboud University Medical Center, develop a simulation module to enable clinicians to gain proficiency and confidence to perform this procedure in a safe and controlled training environment. The new simulation module will be validated and integrated into the Angio Mentor simulator.

Chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) is one of the most common neurosurgical conditions, caused by slow bleeding between the brain and skull. It often develops gradually over weeks, sometimes following minor or unnoticed head trauma, and disproportionately affects older adults. As global populations age and the use of anticoagulants and antiplatelet medications grow, the prevalence of cSDH is expected to increase sharply, with projections indicating it may become the most frequent cranial neurosurgical condition by 2030. This rising clinical burden underscores the need for improved training and minimally invasive treatment pathways.

Simulation plays an important role in supporting consistent training approaches across institutions and experience levels. By helping to shorten learning curves and to reduce procedural variability, simulation contributes to safer interventions and improved patient outcomes. Simulation also enables continuous skill development without exposing patients to risk, supporting the broader goal of making high‑quality minimally invasive care more accessible.

Being part of this consortium is a meaningful opportunity to accelerate the next wave of innovation in neurosurgical training. By empowering clinicians with high-fidelity, lifelike training, we help move the world closer to a future where all medical professionals can develop and validate their skills safely and confidently before they ever step into the clinical environment.” says Tom Englund, CEO Surgical Science.

Surgical Science’s participation in the SEISMIC research consortium has no material effect on the company’s revenues or earnings.

About the SEISMIC research consortium

The SEISMIC public-private partnership includes nine medical technology industry partners, two patient organizations, and seven academic institutions. Together, the consortium will develop integrated technologies such as real‑time surgical navigation combining ultrasound and X‑ray imaging, advanced simulation systems, and minimally invasive diagnostic and treatment methods for intracerebral hemorrhage, subdural hematoma, and brain tumors.

The SEISMIC project aims to reduce surgical trauma, shorten procedure times, and improve recovery – making advanced neurosurgical care more widely available.
