Former DORC CEO joins AcuSurgical as the company advances LUCA®, its robotic platform for vitreoretinal surgery.
AcuSurgical has announced the appointment of Pierre Billardon as Chairman of its Board of Directors, effective July 1, 2026.
Pierre Billardon has spent more than three decades in ophthalmology, holding leadership positions at companies that have played a significant role in the development of modern eye surgery. Most recently, he served as Chief Executive Officer of DORC, the Dutch Ophthalmic Research Center, where he led the company through a period of international growth that culminated in its acquisition by ZEISS. Earlier in his career, he held senior roles at Alcon, Carl Zeiss and Human Optics.
His appointment brings to AcuSurgical a rare combination of experience in vitreoretinal surgery, ophthalmic technology and global medical device strategy. Pierre Billardon has worked closely with surgeons, clinical teams and industry partners across the ophthalmic field, with a particular understanding of the demands of retinal surgery and the path required to bring specialized surgical technologies into clinical practice.
Pierre Billardon joins AcuSurgical as the company continues the development of LUCA®, its robotic platform designed for vitreoretinal surgery. Retinal procedures are among the most delicate in medicine, requiring high levels of precision, stability and control within a confined surgical environment. LUCA has been developed to support surgeons in addressing these challenges and to explore the role that robotics may play in the future of ophthalmic microsurgery.
Following recent clinical milestones, AcuSurgical is now focused on expanding the clinical evidence behind its technology and preparing for the next stages of development. Pierre Billardon’s experience is expected to support the company as it continues to build relationships with surgeons, clinical centers, strategic partners and the broader ophthalmic community.
“Pierre has spent his career at the frontier of ophthalmic surgery, and I couldn’t imagine a better partner as we scale,” said Ronen Castro, CEO of AcuSurgical. “His guidance as Chairman comes at a defining moment for the company. We’re privileged to have him.”
“What Ronen, Christoph and the AcuSurgical team have built is genuinely distinctive,” said Pierre Billardon. “I’m convinced ophthalmic surgery is where robotics will make one of its greatest differences, and I’m delighted to help bring this technology to the surgeons and patients who will benefit from it.”
AcuSurgical also extends its sincere thanks to Didier Deltour for his leadership and support as Chairman during an important period in the company’s development. The Board and management team welcome Pierre Billardon as AcuSurgical continues the clinical development of robotic technologies for vitreoretinal surgery.
