TQ-RoboDrive

TQ-RoboDrive, a business unit of the TQ-Group, develops and manufactures compact frameless motors and customized actuators for applications with the highest demands on torque density, installation space, weight, dynamics and precision. The technology has its roots in robotics research at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and is designed for demanding applications across a wide range of industries.

These roots also extend into surgical robotics. RoboDrive motor technology is still used in the DLR MIRO, a lightweight, torque-controlled robotic arm for medical applications first presented in 2008. MIRO later became a key component of the MiroSurge telesurgery platform, which combines multiple robotic arms with a surgeon console and haptic input devices.

micro surge system

For medical and surgical robotics, the ILM series combines high torque density with smooth running, high dynamic response and thermal robustness, giving engineers the freedom to optimize compact axes and joints for highly precise systems. Its frameless architecture supports direct integration into the surrounding mechanics and application-specific configuration.

Typical applications include:

  • Surgical instrument axes
  • Surgeon consoles
  • Sensitive medical cobots
tq robodrive series motors

TQ-RoboDrive also supports customers beyond motor selection. With its Assembly & Integration Service, the team can take an actuator concept from initial design review to a fully assembled and tested unit. This can include component selection and sourcing, procurement, assembly, integration, testing and quality assurance through to delivery.

By combining frameless motor expertise with actuator implementation, TQ-RoboDrive helps medical robotics developers reduce interfaces between suppliers and move from motor design-in to a shipment-ready actuator with one engineering partner.

Our business is built on quality and consistency through automation. We use automated coating lines designed and built in-house by our engineering team, enabling precise control of coating thickness and uniformity for high-volume production. We have experience with a broad range of coating chemistries and substrates.

Our proprietary automated Virtual Masking™ technology provides selective coating removal in tight-tolerance areas, producing clean edges, precise coating-free areas, and advanced features such as chamfered transitions that support smooth passage of devices through tissue or cannulas.

Surgical Coatings mission is grounded in a commitment to the patients that the devices we coat will ultimately serve. We provide the application expertise and process control our customers need.

What are Surface Coatings?

Surface coatings are specialized finishes applied to medical devices to enhance their performance, reliability, and safety during clinical use. In electrosurgical instruments, coatings are critical for electrical insulation, managing energy, and protecting surrounding tissue.

Our area of specialty is hydrophobic polymer coatings, which play a key role in the performance of many medical devices, including robotic tubes and electrosurgery devices. These coatings reduce friction, repel fluids, and prevent sticking or tissue buildup during procedures. They also serve as electrical insulators or conductors, allowing energy to be directed precisely where it’s needed while minimizing risk to the patient.

The effectiveness of these coatings depends not just on the substrate material or coating chemistry, but on how the coating is applied. Uniform thickness, consistent adhesion, and clean edges are essential to maintaining both device function and patient safety. This is why Surgical Coatings’ main focus is on the application process, ensuring coatings perform exactly as intended, even in the most demanding surgical settings.
