Nami Surgical Appoints Michael Friedrich to its Board

Nami Surgical has appointed medical technology entrepreneur Michael Friedrich as Investor Director, following the close of its latest £3.4 million funding round led by the Scottish National Investment Bank.
The appointment brings more than a decade of experience in surgical robotics, medical device commercialisation and scaling medtech ventures as Nami expands its commercial partnerships and strengthens its position within the surgical robotics industry.
Nami Surgical develops miniaturised ultrasonic scalpels designed for integration into articulated, wristed surgical robotic instruments. Working with industry partners, the company aims to expand the capabilities of next-generation robotic advanced energy instruments by combining, for the first time, ultrasonic energy with the precision and dexterity of robotic articulation.
Michael previously held board and executive leadership roles at Distalmotion, the Swiss company behind the DEXTER Surgical System, serving as CEO and later COO. He helped guide the company through product development, regulatory approvals, clinical adoption and commercial expansion in Europe and the US. During his tenure, Distalmotion raised $400m across European, US and strategic investors, including a $90 million Series E financing round in 2022.
He also previously co-founded Aïmago, an EPFL spinout developing blood-flow imaging technology, which was acquired by NOVADAQ in 2014.
Michael, said:
“I’ve spent more than a decade bringing dexterity to surgeons through robotics. What drew me to Nami is that it builds that dexterity into the energy device itself. Combining the finesse of ultrasonic dissection with the precision of an articulated instrument opens a new category of surgical tools for open and minimally invasive surgery, on soft tissue and beyond, I look forward to working with the Nami team in this new chapter.”
His experience across robotic platform development, regulatory pathways, commercial adoption and scaling medtech businesses will support Nami as it strengthens existing strategic collaborations and pursues further opportunities for growth.
“Michael’s appointment is an important strategic step as we scale Nami and build long-term value. His deep understanding of surgical robotics and experience in growing medical technology businesses will help us strengthen commercial partnerships and bring our ultrasonic platform to market, extending the capabilities and applications of robotic surgery and its benefits for patients. As an executive team we are delighted to welcome him to the board.” (Dr Nico Fenu, Nami Surgical COO and Co-founder).
