World’s Smallest Force and Torque Sensors

Resense is a Joint Venture between the mechatronics component manufacturer WITTENSTEIN and measurement equipment specialist WIKA that develops and markets miniaturized force and torque sensors. Resense sensors provide pioneering applications in medical technology with A Sense of Touch.

Measuring Across the Robotic System

Force feedback and smooth, ergonomic control are no longer out of reach. With our miniature, high-precision, and modular design, Resense’s force and torque sensors enable entirely new applications.

Integration at the distal end of minimally invasive instruments allows surgeons to feel interaction forces directly at the tool tip, supporting precise control and reducing the risk of tissue trauma. Positioned between the robotic arm and instrument, the sensors detect external forces and enable smooth, hand‑guided operation, further enhancing patient safety.

At the system level, integration into the surgeon console enables intuitive adjustments by interpreting subtle user inputs and translating them into fluid, controlled movements, supporting ergonomic working conditions and improved usability.

Setting New Standards by Design – Resense Force/Torque Sensors

Resense redefines compact, high‑precision sensing through advanced silicon technology and a modular design approach, delivering some of the world’s smallest force/torque sensors with outstanding performance.

  • High-End-Technology: High-end silicon strain gauges (500 × 500 µm) with integrated electronics ensure a stable and reliable technology platform
  • Modular Design: Generic elementary cells enable efficient customization for application-specific sensor designs
  • Compactness: Starting from just 6 mm in diameter, unlocking integration in highly space-constrained systems
  • Precision: Force measurement down to 10 mN with low noise, enabling detection of even the smallest signals

Measuring at the Distal-Tip to Unlock Force Feedback

Compact size and a hollow‑shaft design enable seamless integration directly into the shaft of surgical instruments.

resense sensor into surgical instruments

By placing the sensor at the point of tool–tissue interaction, forces are measured exactly where they occur, enabling precise, repeatable data acquisition and restoring true force feedback. The hollow‑shaft architecture allows internal cable routing without increasing the outer diameter, ensuring compatibility with existing instrument geometries.

Positioned close to the distal end, the sensor enables high‑accuracy force measurement without altering external workflows, providing a practical path to integrating force feedback into today’s robotic surgical systems.
