Measuring at the Tooltip – An Example in Eye Surgery
The small size enables the integration of the sensors into end-effectors – this provides decisive advantages. Researchers at Technical University Munich integrated a HEX12 sensor into a robotic system for eye surgery at Klinikum rechts der Isar in Munich. The sensor’s compact size and hollow shaft are perfectly utilized: The small diameter of only 12mm enables the integration into the surgical tool and precise measurement of forces and torques when the needle enters the human eye. In addition, the hollow shaft allows a tube to be inserted for the liquid to flow through.
